Yay, it's ADHD: reason# 2

Many people find getting the diagnosis is really helpful. In this blog series I take you through some common responses I hear from my clients. Maybe one resonates with you particularly, maybe they all do. Here’s Reason 2:

Phew, now I can start figuring out what actually works for me.

This is usually about three things:

  1. Tools and strategies: Now you can start accessing tools and strategies that work specifically for people with ADHD. There are plenty of them out there, and they can help with planning, organisation, motivation, emotional regulation, and more. This is a core aspect of what I work on with my clients who have ADHD.

  2. Medication: For many people, medication is a very effective tool. It can take a while and several tries to find which one works for you. Even meds that work for you are, of course, no magic bullet, but generally my clients find that the right medication helps give them the space and focus for strategies to really work. Not everyone finds medication that works, and it is definitely possible to manage ADHD without - by choice or not. But if medication works, it can really help.

  3. Access to dedicated professionals: Finding the right professional support really matters. I hear regularly from my clients and colleagues, both, that this support accelerates getting your life on track in a way that works (better) for you. I’m talking about professionals like a psychiatrist (for meds), a psychologist (for therapy) and/or a specialised coach (for strategies, support and accountability). Look for someone, or a team, that has experience, and feels like a good fit for you - if you have the luxury of choice. And if you are seeing other professionals, such as a physiotherapist or nutritionist, for example, on something unrelated to ADHD, ask them if they have experience working with clients with ADHD and are able to tailor their support to neurodivergent brains. So you avoid being set up to fail with a programme that doesn't suit your brain.

So now what?

Well, now you know you’re dealing with ADHD you can make a plan. And find out what works for you. There are excellent resources out there – books, magazines, YouTube video’s etc.

And of course, I can be (one of) your dedicated professional(s), if you wish, and help you figure out what you need to manage your ADHD. I’ve got a lot of experience, but you know you best. Together we find the best path forward - and then I help you stay on track.

NB: It is perhaps superfluous to mention this, but as I’m not a medical doctor, prescribing medication is outside my scope of practice. Coaching can, however,  include discussing what support you need and where you can get that support from. And of course I am happy to work with any other professionals on your team.

Curious about the other reasons? They are here:

Reason 1: Ah, it’s not me!

Reason 3: OMG I can stop doing what doesn’t work.

Reason 4: Ha! Now the weird stuff I do makes sense!

Reason 5: Now I know how to explain what I need.

Reason 6: Now  I can figure out what’s me, and what’s ADHD.

Reason 7: Oh, now my family makes sense!

Here’s a link to the blog I wrote about the not so good flipside of diagnosis – because that can be very real too.
