Yay, it's ADHD: reason# 3

Many people find getting the diagnosis is really helpful. In this blog series I take you through some common responses I hear from my clients. Maybe one resonates with you particularly, maybe they all do. Here’s Reason 3:

OMG I can stop doing what doesn’t work.

The other piece of ‘figuring out what actually works for me’, is that you get to stop doing what doesn’t work.

It looks obvious written down like that, but this is a huge thing.

If you don’t know you have ADHD, you (and everyone else) will expect that what works for others should work for you. This includes age-old sentiments like ‘trying harder’ or ‘just do it’ (No, Nike. If you can’t do it, it doesn’t help to be told to ‘Just do it’. Duh).

Once you know you have ADHD, it’s clear that you can stop listening to the (we know they are well meaning) people that give advice that is only suited to neurotypical people. And, as soon as you understand that, it’s easy to see that the majority of general planning and organisation advice is designed for neurotypical people.

In short, you will quickly learn it’s best to stop listening to anything that is ‘advice for neurotypicals’. It doesn’t work and probably makes you feel bad.

So now what?

What DO you do? Well, you get to figure that out now.

And you don’t have to do that all by yourself. Plenty of people have been where you are and done a lot of the figuring already, and there are great books, magazines and other resources out there.

And, if you want, ADHD coaching can give you a dedicated space and a lot of support to help you figure out what’s next - for you specifically and individually. This is important because there is no one-size-fits-all, or even fits-most. So I work with my clients to, together, work out what managing ADHD looks like for them. I’ve got a bunch of experience, but you know you best.

We put your strategies together, together, and then I help you stay on track.

Curious about the other reasons? They are here:

Reason 1: Ah, it’s not me!

Reason 2: Phew, now I can start figuring out what actually works for me.

Reason 4: Ha! Now the weird stuff I do makes sense!

Reason 5: Now I know how to explain what I need.

Reason 6: Now  I can figure out what’s me, and what’s ADHD.

Reason 7: Oh, now my family makes sense!

Or go back to the main post and read about the flipside – because that can be very real too.
